Tanning

Skill Overview

Tanning is the process of converting raw animal hides into durable, long-lasting leather through a series of preservation and treatment techniques. This skill has been practiced for thousands of years and remains an important craft.

The tanning process involves cleaning and preparing hides, removing hair and unwanted tissue, and treating the material with natural tanning agents. These treatments prevent decomposition while improving the leather's strength, flexibility, and resistance to moisture.

Developing tanning skills requires attention to detail, patience, and an understanding of different tanning methods and materials. Mastering this craft enables the production of high-quality leather used in clothing, footwear, equipment, armor, and a wide range of handmade goods.

For guidance on using the skill set, see the Tanning Guide(in progress).
