Skill Overview

While many in the world arm themselves with spear and shield, the jeweler prefers the hammer, the graver, and the careful hand. From a lump of slag or a rough stone comes work that sits on the hand, at the throat, or on the ear — plain bands for daily wear, cut stones that catch the light, chains linked one by one, and charms cast small enough to hang from a bracelet.

A beginner learns to cast simple pieces and to cut a basic stone. With practice comes wire and chain, broader bands, finer cuts, and engraved patterns. The best work is slow: metal heated and hammered, gems laid out and polished with care, settings and marks added only when the piece will take them.

Jewelry is focused on metal and stone: casting, hot and cold work, chain assembly, gem cutting, engraving, and setting. Materials include metal slag and scrap, wax and clay for casting, cut and uncut stones, wire and stock from the hammer, and small cast charms. Tools of the trade are the hammer, tongs, crucible, graver, scriber, gem chisel, lap, and polishing compound, with a strong fire or furnace for melting and for baking molds.

For guidance on using the skill set, see the Jewelry Guide(in progress).

Maker's mark is available on jewelry that can be engraved. It is a short identifying mark of the craftsman and does not use a full decorative engraving pattern slot. It is cut with the engrave command rather than learned as a separate decorative lore.

Notes on Learning

  • You cannot train 'Basic Jewelry' alone. Your basic jewelry rank increases as you train the jewelry actions and recipes.
  • To view and learn related lores from trainers, use the learn lore and the learn lore [] from commands.
  • Jewelry work requires recipes recalled before many steps. Engraving patterns are lores learned from the trainer.
  • Jewelers can use restyle on finished player-crafted pieces. No separate skill rank is required beyond owning the work.
  • You can unlearn recipes; engraving lores follow the same rules as other craft lores.
  • Wire recipes need wire, not heavy stock — draw stock into wire first when the recipe calls for it.
  • Some stones cannot be cut. Failed cutting steps can ruin the stone.
  • Charms hang on charm bracelets with the existing charm put/get behavior.

Related commands are commands that require little or no extra training beyond the skill set, but are necessary as part of jewelry work.

Recall *recall

recipe-recall *

Before casting, cold-working a finished form, assembling chain, or cutting a stone, you need a recipe recalled so the work follows the correct steps.

Use recipe-recall to search the recipes you know. The command lists every known recipe whose name matches the word or fragment you typed. Choose a number from the list to recall that recipe. Use recall when you already know the full name.

A recalled recipe shows materials, yield, and the order of work. Type recipes to review known recipes once the skill is learned.

Engraving patterns are lores: use learn lore / learn lore from , then engrave the piece.

When you see this in use you see:

Restyle restyle

Once player-crafted jewelry is complete, it can be altered slightly through the restyle menu. No skill training is required beyond owning the piece. Simply restyle and you will be shown a menu of short names based on what has actually been done to the piece (metal, engraving, set stones, and similar features).

Skill Details

Form Wax form

Soften and shape wax into the form required by the recalled casting recipe. Low skill may need several passes; higher skill finishes the form more cleanly in fewer attempts. Continue forming an unfinished wax form until it is complete, then pack clay around it.

When you see this in use you see:

> *form wax* [Success: 1, Roll: 57] You warm the wax and press it into shape. The size is right. The form is still rough and needs more work.

Make Mold mold

Pack clay around a finished wax form, leaving a runoff, until the mold is ready to bake. Incomplete molds are continued with the same command. Heat the packed mold over a low flame to bake it before casting.

When you see this in use you see:

> *mold clay* [Success: 1, Roll: 61] You finish the clay investment. The mold is ready to bake over a low flame.

Cast Jewelry cast

Pour molten metal from a crucible into a baked clay mold to produce the piece named by the recalled casting recipe. Requires metal melted in a crucible and tongs as needed. The mold is used up when you cast.

Required Tools / Setup: Baked jewelry mold, molten metal in a crucible, tongs as needed.

When you see this in use you see:

> *cast mold* [Success: 1, Roll: 95] You pour the metal into the mold. When it cools, the piece comes free of the clay.

Hot Work Stock hotwork

Work molten metal from a crucible under the hammer into solid stock ready for cold work. The hammer should be available nearby.

Required Tools: Hammer nearby; crucible with molten metal; tongs as needed.

When you see this in use you see:

> *hotwork cru* [Success: 1, Roll: 60] A few careful strikes settle the glowing metal. The form comes out even and solid, with almost no waste.

Cold Work Stock coldwork

Draw or shape stock into wire, links, bands, or other forms the recalled recipe calls for. Wire recipes require wire, not heavy cylindrical stock — produce wire first when needed. Link recipes produce tiny or large links from wire. Solid band and forged recipes work from stock.

Required Tools: Hammer in hand or nearby.

When you see this in use you see:

> *coldwork stock* [Success: 1, Roll: 47] You draw the metal under the hammer into a length of wire. > *coldwork wire* [Success: 1, Roll: 52] You bend and close the wire under the hammer into chain links.

Assemble Jewelry assemble to

Join links into an incomplete chain, then continue adding links until the recalled chain or bracelet recipe is complete. Pieces must be the same metal. Start with two matching links, then assemble further links to the incomplete work.

Required Tools: Hammer in hand or nearby.

When you see this in use you see:

> *assemble link to link* [Success: 1, Roll: 47] You join the pieces under the hammer. The fit is rough, but it holds. > *assemble link to incomplete* [Success: 1, Roll: 61] You open a link, catch the chain, and close it under the hammer.

Layout Gem layout

Mark the stone for the recalled cut. This is the first step of every cutting recipe. Some stones cannot be cut.

Required Tools: Scriber in hand or nearby.

When you see this in use you see:

> *layout stone* [Success: 1, Roll: 48] You mark the stone in rough lines. The layout is uneven, but it is enough to work from.

Rough Cut Gem roughcut

Reduce the stone toward the shape of the recalled cut. Harder cuts use more rough and shape passes and punish mistakes more severely — a failed step can ruin the stone.

Required Tools: Hammer and gem chisel in hand or nearby.

When you see this in use you see:

> *roughcut gem* [Success: 1, Roll: 30] You reduce the stone with controlled cuts. The rough form begins to emerge.

Shape Gem shape

Work the faces and outline of the cut into place after the rough form is established. Number of shape steps depends on the recalled cut.

Required Tools: Lap in hand or nearby.

When you see this in use you see:

> *shape gem* [Success: 1, Roll: 8] You work the facets into place. The cut is taking proper shape.

Polish Gem polish

Polish the finished cut so the faces take light cleanly. Last step of a cutting recipe.

Required Tools: Polishing compound in hand or nearby.

When you see this in use you see:

> *polish gem* [Success: 1, Roll: 22] The facets take a clear polish under your work. The stone begins to catch light.

Engrave Jewelry engrave

Cut a learned engraving pattern into player-crafted jewelry that will take engraving. Patterns are lores learned from the trainer. Work proceeds in several passes until the pattern is complete.

Maker's mark can be chosen from the engrave menu as a short free identifying mark. It does not use a full decorative pattern slot.

Required Tools: Graver in hand or nearby.

When you see this in use you see:

> *engrave ring* Engraving Patterns _____________ [1] Maker's Mark (free) [2] Geometric Engraving [3] Vines Engraving _____________ > *engrave ring* [Success: 1, Roll: 82] A final careful pass finishes the pattern. The lines read clean and deliberate.

Set Gem set with

Seat a finished cut stone into player-crafted jewelry that can accept a setting. Uncut stones will not set. Some pieces accept more than one stone; the short name and description update to reflect what is set.

When you see this in use you see:

> *set ring with ruby* [Success: 1, Roll: 40] You seat the stone and work the metal around it. The stone settles and holds.

Materials and Tools

  • Metal — Slag and scrap melted in a crucible; the metal carries through stock, wire, links, and finished pieces when work is done correctly.
  • Casting supplies — Wax, clay, a low flame to bake the mold, tongs as needed.
  • Gem tools — Scriber, hammer, gem chisel, lap, polishing compound.
  • Bench tools — Hammer, graver, tongs, crucible, furnace or strong fire.

To find slag, wax, clay, and basic tools, search the shops list and locksmithing suppliers where melting gear is sold.
