Tanning Guide¶
Below you'll find everything important to know about Tanning.
In a Nutshell¶
Pros¶
- Overall, the skill doesn't require a lot of ranks to be successful.
- You can make use of animal parts to provide materials for Tailoring and Leather-working
- Skilling costs almost nothing if you can gather your own pelts and brains.
- You can stockpile tailoring and leather working materials in your downtime.
Cons¶
- Long round times on every skill make skill point gain slow, even with Peaceful Spirit.
- Currently, this skill requires a heavy time investment for little reward. Most of the materials produced can be purchased from NPC shops.
- IMHO, this skill set is only useful to a primary non-com character as it's not profitable to skin animals, tan and sell the leather.
Advice & Tips¶
Use rat pelts and brains from Burnt Villa to skill with by making leather. This is the cheapest way to skill up. Start by collecting a few hundred pelts and a bunch of beetle/wasp brains. Then find a quiet place to clean the pelts, you'll need a tray from Arvane's shop and to RECIPE-RECALL -> BASIC TANNING -> LEATHER TANNING RECIPE. Next CLEAN PELT, this basic skill will be somewhat difficult at first, I recommend to go train Clean Hide to 10 once you have enough SP. Continue cleaning until you finish your stockpile of pelts then train up Dehair Hide as high as you can. If your success is low enough at dehairing then you can start doing DEHAIR HIDE on your cleaned pelts (now called cleaned hides) or get more pelts to clean and train dehair more. Repeat this cycle with SCRAPE HIDE skill and use the FLESH HIDE command when you're happy with the success rate. After SCRAPE HIDE, start training up TAN HIDE. I recommend getting at least 25 ranks in it before actually tanning the scraped hides, otherwise you're waste both time and brains. The last skill to develop is DRY HIDE which has a long round timer so train it up in advance also.
Now not only can you reliably create leather, but you can also efficiently skill up the rest of the sub-skills in Tanning and learn the fur lining recipes.
