Ereal's Blessings upon you, He who watches over us all. Each man must find his way with respect to the adulation of Ereal. It is a personal matter that may not be dictated, only guided. A deeper look into your heart shall best inform your devotions.¶
Iridine's Premier Journal!
The first edition of the Ephemeris has sold incredibly well and I would like to thank everyone who has purchased it. This second edition will also see it's profits be donated to the reconstruction of the orphanage which belonged to the Temple of the Morning. As usual, if you wish to have an announcement posted within the Ephemeris, or would like to write something yourself, you can always contact Illun Vaerimus.
Reaffirmation of the faith
Not too long ago, the priests have gathered in order to meet with the populace of Iridine. We believers may have doubt in Ereal in such dark times, but we shall not fear as the Holy One is our Father and will help us even in the darkest of times. What follows is a transcript of the words spoken by the leading priest:
"Children of Ereal, we welcome you to this sacred space in the name of the Father and the Light. We are here today to celebrate the renewal of life and light, our land's rebirth after the long dark wanderings of the winter. The warming air and the lengthening days foretell the planting times, the growing times, and in these busy hours it is easy to forget why we are here. Our Father, the Holy Sun, has given much to us, His children."
"Do we thank Him? Not all are grateful for His love. Some of us doubt. Some of us weaken. Some of us fall into the shadows of untruth. Ereal is the one, true god. It is to Ereal we owe our faith and love, our trust and obedience. Those who speak otherwise speak lies against their Holy Father. We are His children, born of World through the blessings of His Light as told in the story of Creation."
"Like children, we sometimes wander and at times are lost - our Father's gifts to us are many, but there is no shame in feeling doubt. Any child will wonder at the whys and wherefores of obedience to a parent's wishes. As there are many of us, it may even seem as though He does not listen do our prayers, as though He does not care. This is untrue. Our Sunfather has granted some, those who choose to serve Him more directly than the rest of His children, gifts of Light to which all have borne witness."
"Healers, Seers, Caretakers of the earth and beasts, all here here to prove our Holy Father's love. No father wants his children harmed; we are resilient, but there are times when we require outside aid to heal. No father wants his children to walk blindly through their lives, unaware of the great goods and perils those lives bring. No father wants his children to neglect the earth and beast they rely for sustenance. The gifts granted to those of the Cult come from the Holy One, nothing else."
"Unbelievers claim power as well. They claim to draw their favour from the moons, false idols, false powers. These misbelievers only lead the Children of the Sun astray. Mist and shadow, illusion, blood and pain... These are what the moons will give. Darkness, instead of Ereal's warmth and Holy Light. Turning your back upon the Father can only bring you pain."
"Recent events have forced our hand. A false believer stalks our city's shadows, spreading lies, rumors. Our brothers and sisters from the Temple have proven, without a doubt, that this man and no other is responsible for the burning of over a hundred children in the terrible orphanage fire... He strikes in shadows, fleeing the Light of our Holy One. This unbeliever must be taught the errors of his way. You, as the faithful children of the Father, are called upon to aid us all. Find this man."
Lasciel's Death
She was a proud woman and had many projects in the near future. She wished to start a brokering association which may have ended up as being a merchant house in the long term. Pirs was her associate and he hasn't been seen much around Iridine since her unfortunate death. The cause of her death is still being investigated and it appears that she was murdered while she was outside of the city walls. She may have taken a liking to bartering within the city's walls, but her true nature was to spend time in the outdoors where she spent much of her free time. Unfortunately I have only met her once or twice before her departure to the other side, but she was a valiant woman filled with ambitions, curiosity and love.
It is with deep regret that I am writing this article, but I am doing such to honor a remarkable woman who perished too soon to my liking and those who loved her. May she cross to the other side without hassle. Ereal's blessings upon her.
The investigation is still going on and the criminal responsible for her death will eventually be found.¶
Palium was rescued!
Details concerning both his rescue and his kidnapping are now much more clear. While this man was minding his own business on a busy street in the forums, he was attacked by Gormesh who is known who is rough behavior and countless crimes committed within the Republic's walls. This time, with gladius and shield in hand, Gormesh attacked Palium, catching him off-guard while he was finishing a trade with a merchant. He did not have any chances of putting much resistance and as such, he was sent into unconsciousness.
Upon awakening, he found himself locked in an inn room with his hands and feet tightly bound with rope. He could not set himself free from these bounds. He spent some time in there until his friends could finally come and rescue him.
When learning that he was kidnapped, Palium's friends made it their goal to recover him from the man that had kidnapped him, they would do whatever it took to set him free. Knowing that he was in an inn room in the city due to the numbered door found where he was being kidnapped, his friends took it upon themselves to ask each innkeeper if they had seen a man carrying Palium inside of the inn. They gave a brief description of Palium to the innkeepers and one finally responded that she had seen him. He was being kidnapped inside of Thermima's inn.
"Freedom. It is all that matters."¶
The return of the madman
It was a fine morning in Iridine when a woman named Asora asked for any volunteers with a keen eye for fine clothes to come suggest, or to even craft, the perfect outfit for Onaxis Corvelis' daughter, Laetia Corvelis. I was the first to arrive, hoping to find some useful news that I could write about for the Iridine Ephemeris; I did not wish to partake in the contest they were holding. It took some time before others arrived and unfortunately only two of them showed up. Gratia Orbilio and Nyphistra, her client and tailor, were the ones to arrive. After some time, Asora was frightened at the thought of bringing only us three back to her master's tent. We went through the wonderful gardens and arrived at the tent promptly, where we met Onaxis Corvelis as well as Laetia Corvelis. She was quite shocked that only the three of us came to her contest, where the person who designed the best outfit would receive a prize.
Her father, Onaxis Corvelis was a proud man, who wished to do anything he could to please his daughter. He ordered many fine clothes from all over Midlight for the occasion. Nyphistra designed an outfit for the patrician's daughter and she appeared enthusiasmed by the idea. They both stepped away to another section of the tent so Nyphistra could take her measurements. It didn't take long before we heard yelling and screaming. We went inside, rushing to their aid, and we noticed Laetia Corvelis was on the ground, burning in heavy flames. We tossed water and hit her with some clothes to extinguish her, but nothing would put the fire out.
We finally managed to take out the fire, but unfortunately a lot of damage was done to her and she fell into unconsciousness. I then brought water and made her drink some, to help her from the severe dehydration she had experienced due to the flames, but unfortunately it was too little too late. She succumbed to the damage the fire caused her. At first, it was believed that she had burnt because of the lantern and that it had caught her stola on fire, but Nyphistra revealed to us that she heard a man's voice telling them 'Burn' and some laughing before the poor woman turned into flames. This was the same man that burnt the orphanage in the harbor.
Patrol in Monlon gone awry
There was word from a man that strange happenings were surrounding Monlon, the holy city. Just outside of the city, into the northern cliffs which used to be a battlefield against many wars with the Cinerans, an opening leading towards the inside of the earth was found. The said man found a series of tunnels and was quite perplexed by such. He came back to Iridine and sought the help of a few Legionaries to discover the said tunnels who were recently dug. The Legionaries were quite surprised that someone, or something, had built tunnels in such an area and they decided to escort the man and to explore the depths of the tunnels. They noticed body parts here and there near the entrance of the tunnels.
Upon arriving at the tunnels, they had not noticed anything strange. They started exploring the said tunnels and a group of volunteer guards arrived due to their curiosity. What happened next is uncertain, but as they reached the end of the tunnels a door stood there, opened and many esecarni were unleashed upon the group. They defended as well as they could and some of them were quite injured, but all lived to see the next day.
Rumors in Monlon speak of a very large and unusual esecarnus which roams the outline of town and can be seen at night when the moons glow brightly. The said beast was not captured or killed during the group's recent adventure. There are also rumors of a miner that was recently killed and what caused the death is uncertain. All that is known is that the man lost his leg while he was drunk and wandering near the mines, but eventually died of blood loss.
Games at the Colosseum
Once again, Canyon held some games at the Colosseum, but this time it was in a format of tournament for the most part. Three classes were made and the individuals were grouped up depending on their assessment done by Sabinus. These games were Canyon's chance at becoming the Editor Ludorum. Both Ardinia and Hephaistion will have their chance in the upcoming weeks. Prizes were awarded to the champions of their respective classes.

Many small stories:
Just recently, I have been attempting to raise as many funds as possible for the reconstruction of the orphanage and I have received great news from a priest. He believes that the reconstruction of the orphanage is going to be mostly paid by the Temple itself, but that any donations would be greatly appreciated. The priest mentionned the addition of a possible donation box inside of the Temple of the Morning, as well, for those of you who may feel insecure when handing out money. Our current goal is to raise a hundred talents. While it is a hefty sum, half of it has already been donated to me. I have greatly contributed myself and willingly gave thirty-five talents of my own money to the cause. As always, if you wish to donate, please seek Illun Vaerimus.
There are rumors of a tall dark man who wields an iron mace to be relentless in the city. He wears a featureless leather faceplate to cover his identity and he has attacked many individuals, both inside and outside of the city. Any further details concerning this man should be given to the local constables and Legionaries.
Poem:
The Madman
I remember when the orphanage stood still,
A refuge for orphans who were lost and ill,
It was a dark moment in our Republic,
Where all of the problems became public,
A madman jumped from roof to roof,
He stood there, gazing at them, aloof,
Fire came out of his palms,
It appears he had some qualms,
He laughed and laughed, at those burning,
He almost collapsed when they fell, squirming,
One day it will be his turn,
That he will be caught and burn.
The Story of Creation (part 1)
Long, long ago, before Iridine was founded, and indeed, before any living thing existed, there was Ereal. Ereal was the bright, warm sun, and he walked through a void darker than the darkest night, and everywhere Ereal walked, the darkness was dispelled, but there was no one to notice or to care, for Ereal was alone.
Ereal wandered through the void for a timeless time which only a god can know, the void never changing before or behind him. Then something happened which had never happened before. Ereal came upon another thing which was not himself and not the void. Ahead of him, simply lying in the void, he saw a rock. Ereal was young then, and he had never seen a rock before, and for a moment he was unable to speak, so strange it was to see another thing in the Void Beyond Time beside him. Then Ereal asked, "Who are you, that you walk in the Void beside a god?" And the rock replied, "I am World. I do not walk the Void, but I rest here, waiting."
"For what do you wait?" asked Ereal.
"I do not know," replied the World. "But I have found it. I have waited here always, and now you have arrived."
"Waited for me?" replied Ereal, astounded. "Why? For what purpose?"
To which the World replied, "I do not know. But come, lie down with me. We were and are for each other, at least now." And the World was so happy that she cried tears of joy and sadness, and water ran over her. And as she had asked, Ereal lay down with the world, and from that union World was impregnated, and she blossomed fertile with the promise of life to come, which would rise forth from her when the time was right and join World and Ereal in the Void.
And after he lay with her, World said, "Come, I am cold. Lie close beside me, and hold me in your embrace, for our children are within my womb, and you must help me care for them." Ereal considered this. He was a kind god, and rather than becoming bitter that World made such demands upon him, Ereal was filled with affection for his children to be born.
"They shall be my sons and daughters," replied Ereal. "I will lie close to you and keep you warm, that they may be born strong and walk the void, lighting it as their father has. We shall fill the Void with our offspring, World, and dispel it, and it shall be the home and servant of our children."
But World was unswayed by Ereal's bragging. She knew with the heart of a woman that Ereal had the weakness of pride which is in all men. Still, she did not hate him for it, but felt rather a kind of quiet affection. She did not reply to him, but smiled the knowing smile of a woman who will not share her secrets, and she settled down to rest as her belly grew big with Ereal's get.
As time passed, life blossomed in World. Her salty tears at meeting her husband became the seas, and creatures of all kinds bloomed on the rock that was World. As life from their marriage bed came to World, fish appeared in her seas, and Ereal warmed them. All manner of forests and crops came to grow on the land, and Ereal gave them sustainance. Animals ate the plants, and fish ate the plants, and animals ate the fish, and World blossomed with the secret glow of an expectant mother, and Ereal watched with pride, bathing them in his warmth.
In time, other things grew. In time, Man came to life on World, and when Ereal saw Man, he knew that he was seeing the face of his children. As the animals ate the plants, so did Man eat the animals. And as Man ate the animals, the animals tried to eat Man.

The Story of Creation (part 2)
First Horse tried to eat man, gnashing at him with dull teeth, but Man was clever, and he bridled Horse, wrapping Horse in leather and beating him with a stick, until Horse cried, "Stop! I was a fool to attack Man, for you are the greatest child of Ereal! Stop, and I shall always serve you," and Man relented, no longer beating Horse, but he did not remove the leather wrappings from Horse, and Horse wears Man's bridle to this day, Man's faithful servant in all things.
Then did Cow attack man, but Man fought back with anger and intelligence, riding fast and far upon the back of Horse, crushing Cow with weapons of stone and wood, until Cow cried, "Hold! If you strike me again, you will slay me forever! Only do not slay me, and my children shall obey you, giving you their bodies as meat and their milk as drink, as long as you promise never to erase them from World!" And Man relented, and Cow came to serve him, and Man has kept his vow, and though Man ate of Cow's flesh and drank of her milk, she prospered under his care and grew large and fat.
So too did several other animals attack Man: Sheep, Goose, Dog, Cat, Mule, Ox, Chicken, Duck- all did Man master, or they were driven far from him, to hide in the dark places of the world, away from the healing and strengthening light of Ereal.
And as World was a woman, she was overcome by fits of temper, and sometimes fierce storms blew across her face, storms which erupted from her heart and swept with a mighty fury over her, but in time these passed, and for the most part, World held her mighty temper in check. But when the storms grew too fierce and World cried to Ereal, "Look what you have done to me! I have grown fat with your child and you are happy about it!", Ereal knew that he should move away for a while. He moved a few steps away, so that World could not lash out at him with her temper, but as he gave World more room in the Void, winter swept across her, and Man grew cold.
Ereal had pity upon Man, and the Sun reached into his belly and pulled forth a sliver of his own heart. This he placed in Man's cold hands, saying: "I must leave World for a time, for she grows tired of my company. But remember me by this part of me until I return." And Man called this sliver of Ereal's heart "Fire", and with it he warmed his home and cooked his food and obtained all manner of benefit, for a sliver of Ereal's heart was of great value indeed.
When World's temper had cooled, Ereal returned to her, and summer came to the world again, but always she had fits of ire, and at these times, Ereal, who had little ire in himself, grew frustrated with her and, rather than war with his wife, moved out of earshot, and at these times, Winter came again. So it is that every year, Ereal moves a little farther from World for a while until she allows him to return to her side, and every year World welcomes her husband back, and the celebration of their reconciliation is the wild, crazy riot of life known as spring.

The Story of Creation (part 3)
Time passed, and Ereal looked at World and saw that his children had multiplied. There were many men now, and all of them busy with their little lives and their little wars. Ereal tried to watch them all, but he was too busy, for he had so many children now that he had to move constantly back and forth across World so that flowers could bloom and crops could ripen. From orchard to meadow to forest he walked, reveling in the beauty of his offspring. But as Ereal moved across World, he could not spend much time with his children. Some grew sick and died. Others lived in darkness, blinded by their own ignorance. Still others foolishly consumed World herself, thinking that eating their mother would make them strong.
"I must teach my children," thought Ereal, "but there are so many! How will I teach them all?" Then Ereal had an idea, and as he moved across the face of World he searched, looking down upon Man, until he saw a lowly shepherd playing his pipes in a field. And Ereal moved over the field and asked the shepherd, "Ho, Shepherd, how is it that you are so happy when so many across World are suffering?" And the shepherd replied, "My sheep are fed. My belly is full. The sun shines down upon me, warming my bed here upon the grass. The people of World are good, but they are like children. They need help to live, and to see and to feel. They need someone to teach them the beauties of life."
And Ereal thought, "This shepherd is the man for me." So he said, "Shepherd, will you serve me?" And the Shepherd replied smartly, "Will you serve me instead?" And Ereal replied, "I already serve you, for I make your bed warm and I make the grass grow for your sheep to eat. I have given you fire, and I ripen the crops in your fields." And the Shepherd, who was wise, thought about this. Then he said, "You serve me. So shall I serve you. Speak, and I am yours to command." And Ereal said to the Shepherd, "I command you thus: go forth into the world, finding your fellow men, and give them my blessing. Heal them in their sickness, educate them in their ignorance, and protect them from their own destructive hearts."
And as Father Ereal had commanded, so did the shepherd obey. He moved through the world, teaching others of Ereal. But he found that the world was a large place, filled with many people. So as Ereal had commanded him, so did the shepherd command other men of gentle hearts, teaching them how to heal the sick, and how to see the truth, and how to live in harmony with their mother the World.
So to this day do the Priests of Ereal follow the example of the shepherd, serving, as our lord Ereal has commanded, for Ereal loves the world and the people in it, but he is so busy ripening crops and warming the waters that he cannot possibly serve each man directly. The Priests of Ereal heal and teach and protect for their Lord of the Morning, Light, and Warmth, doing the work that their god has commanded them to do.
Someday, World's time will come, and she will give birth to her children. The sons and daughters of Ereal will walk the Void with their father, but to do so they must be strong and wise and gentle. It is the task of the Cult of Ereal to heal their bodies and light their way and protect World until the time of mankind's birth arrives.

The creatures of Midlight
The Diabolus Ardentis:
This strange creature is of the same family as an alligator. They have many similarities between each others, but the diabolus ardentis is generally bigger than an alligator. The name of the creature comes from the old Iridinian which means "The Evil Burning One" which is the name it was given because of its habit of throwing a rancid substance at its targets. This creature can most notably be found lurking within the old city, the perfect place for this animal due to the area being covered with grass and many creatures. The carrion beetles and the leech snakes are perfect targets for this creature which can easily digest them due to its advanced metabolism. The reptile has midnight black scales which is high in demand at the carcass dealer to craft boots and other clothing due to its unique color and texture. Unlike the alligator, the diabolus ardentis has scales instead of a hide and it also bears scarlet eyes instead of yellowish ones. The tail makes up the majority of its length, and it is very slender, but it is also covered with slightly glowing yellowish spots. This creature is very swift and makes great use of its wide and strong jaw. It has been rumored to have cut down carrion beetles in just one bite before. When compared to the alligator, this creature has claws which are much longer and sharper and it will make great use of it while attacking their prey. The rancid substance it throws is actually some kind of acid, which I personally believe comes from its stomach due to the food they eat, the carrion beetles and the venomous leech snakes. When feeding on such prey, the animal has much more fluids in its stomach and requires to evacuate it, and therefore uses it as a defensive mechanism when attacked due to its acidness.
The people of Iridine
Ardinia Liado:
The curent owner of the Cruentus Laureola, one of the most famous stables in the Republic, was born to an Altene mother, but her father was unknown due to strange circumstances. She was raised in Altene by her mother and the woman's husband. Her mother belonged to the Altene group called the Lioness, a group of female mercenaries known for their fierceness, and she accomplished many deeds for her country. Ardinia had a large family which consisted of seven brothers and she was the only sister. Her outlook on life changed when she was only twelve years old, she was already a relatively strong person and some of her parents' friends noticed it when she lifted her bigger brother during a small fight. The following day, she was already enlisted into the aid of the Heart of Altene where she was sent on battlefields to carry and nurse the wounded. She spent two years doing this heavy work, while she was still only a girl. After the two years, she enlisted in the Heart of Altene, which is the army of Altene and you are obligated to spend four years with it. She ultimately learned how to handle the spear, the same weapon her mother used.
Once her service was finally done with the Heart of Altene, she joined the Lioness group. She did one mission with them before deciding to leave her home country. She came to Iridine, looking for one of her brothers. Slowly managing to make a name for herself in Iridine, she met Cuculuinn, a man who was very dear to her. They had intentions of marrying each other, but it never materialized. It is because of her relation with this man that she learned of the Cruentus Laureola and joined their ranks as a healer. Before long, she became a gladiator and enjoyed it immensely. Breonna Balasarre pushed her to become a professional gladiator, knowing that she could very well do it. And she did. She is now the proud owner of the Cruentus Laureola after Breonna left it into her hands. She has also fought countless battles in the name of the Republic. She is hoping to possibly be the next Editor Ludorum.
The Places of Iridine
The Brawling Bear:
Owned by Amerigo, the Brawling Bear is a tavern that can be found east of the Hospice of the Morning Light. It sits there just before the crossroads. The vivid sign is painted with two large bears fighting one another while standing on their hind legs. This tavern is usually quiet and the perfect place for a good drink with a friend or two. Food is also served by Amerigo. Ale, mead, fig wine and beer can be found there. Nothing special, but all of them taste good regardless. Pistachios and some crusty white bread with melted cheese coming straight out of the stove are both delicious and incredibly cheap snacks while sipping one of your favorite drink!
Pompian's hairdressing service:
Those familiar with the Old City will know that the eastern side consists of old structures that are still in good enough condition to be used these days. In the eastern side can be found Pompian, a hairdress who also sells mirrors and combs for all tastes and of various prices. If your hair grows too long or if you are tired of having the same haircut, come see Pompian! The stylish man has a very large amount of skill available to you at a very small price! Few can cut hair as well as he does in this fine city. You will never be deceived by him.
History of Iridine
(continuation from the first volume of the Iridine Ephemeris)
After the great king Tulca the first died of old age, Granthulius was appointed as the new king of the small kingdom of Iridine. His reign lasted a total of thirty three years, ranging from the fourty-eight year of the era of the kings up to the eighty-first. He continued what Tulca had started, a focus on the religion surrounding Iridine. He had his sights on the holy city and it's surroundings. He spent many years developping the perfect strategy to capture Monlon from it's Cineran and Aestivan occupants. The city, home of the Oracle of Ereal, was finally captured and Granthulius would forever be remembered for his hard work and strategies that paid off. Ever since, Monlon has been the target of many war attempts and has often been used as reason enough to engage in an all out war for the Cinerans and the Aestivans against the Iridine Legions. Oddly enough, once Granthulius died of old age, the man to succeed him was an Aestivan named Vetallun who died in a short revolution twenty-four years after Granthulius died. The town that is currently named Vetallun draws it's name from the Aestivan, he was an excellent strategist and was the one to command the construction of the fortress that still stands to this day.
Various things of interest
Lucrece Bellante, a resident of the Steps, is offering her knowledge of the area to serve as a guide through the busy and sometimes dangerous streets of the district. Some interesting wares can be found deeper into the area of the Steps, but are you willing to adventure alone and guideless when there are purse cutters prowling about? For a very small fee she can guide you, but also venture deeper into the territories where some men and women dare not go to buy those special wares you may be needing.
