Expansion of Blackvine
A recent meeting of the Senate declared that some funds would be given to the outlying regions of our great Republic to further the growth, but also to cement our position as a great nation. As you have been aware in the past, the outlying regions have been the prey of attackers and have been dealt massive blows, like the burning of Rock Valley and Blackvine, but also of the Holy City. Since those hard times seem to be behind us and peace has been declared with those attackers, it is now time to rebuild our nation to become stronger than ever. As such, Blackvine was the first to receive the funds from the Senate and the small town will make great use of it.
The expansion of the harbor to accomodate more ships will have a direct impact on the small town which may very well see more future expansion because of it. House Orien, one of the five noble noble houses in Remath, has already shown interest in making it's way to Blackvine and to export as well as import goods coming from Remath, but possibly from other nations as well. The small town may very well see itself becoming bigger by the day, but the walls may have to come down at one point to allow for further expansion of the city.

Palium gone missing?
On a fine afternoon on the sixth day of Rindak in the 248th Year of the Republic, a man told me a strange story. While I was sitting on the painted wooden chair at the Stone Toga Inn, he made me aware that a man named Palium had recently gone missing just a few weeks earlier. It is not known if Palium had a girlfriend or a wife. He was kidnapped by a group of bandits right where I was sitting - just outside the Stone Toga Inn. Not a single word has been heard since this happening and those searching for him have been clueless so far. Few people seem to know him and whether he had bad gambling habits or just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Auxilii under attack
As a quiet man was sitting on the bench just outside of Constantine's bar, he was attacked by a woman wielding a very menacing dagger. The man who was attacked is in fact an Auxilii and he was on duty at the time. Attacking an Auxilii is heavily frowned upon seeing as they greatly help our Republic when dealing with new foreigners, but also some citizens. It should be noted that this very same woman, named Sueve, has attacked this man two times before as well. She was arrested for all of her committed crimes by the Republic's hard-working Constabulary force.
Please show some respect to the hard-working Auxilii.

Madman running about
Stories of a madman wandering about the city have reached my ears. Some claim he is the person responsible behind the burning of the orphanage in the harbor, which is now in ruins, just across the street from Jocephus' tailor shop. It is not fully known how this man set fire to the orphanage, but it appears that he was throwing fire at it and it finally caught fire. It was night and it is entirely possible that he was throwing lanterns, torches and the likes to set it ablaze. Some witnesses claim that the man was not throwing lanterns or torches, but that it was in fact an evil doing. Fortunately those are simply rumors at this point.
The same madman is rumored to have killed several other individuals in our great Republic with no apparent reason. The name of the man is not unknown, but it is said that it is better not to be said otherwise the madman will only make things worse.
Several children were burnt during their sleep in the orphanage due to the fire. May they find their way across peacefully. Ereal's blessings.
When more information concerning the man becomes available, it will be written in the second edition of the Ephemeris.

Trash litters the floor
It is in disbelief that I walk these streets of Iridine, seeing the trash piled up in secluded corners, on our streets and in our alleyways. Living in a society will bring the worst out of some of the individuals that live with us and they will feel free to break all social guidance. This city was built with the sweat and blood of our forefathers and to see it filled with trash is not a sight I would have liked to see. The importance of keeping our city clean is of the outmost importance to prevent the apparation of the plague disease. We should all be proud of our magnificient city and take care of it as it takes care of us.
Keep your eyes opened for future work opportunities.

The Broker's Association
It has come to my attention that a few individuals have decided to create a broker's association where individuals with a swift tongue for bartering will be more than welcome. The current association is being made between Pirs and Lasciel, but they are looking to expand dramatically their numbers. With the creation of the association, there will be no more searching for these talented men and women, as they will readily offer their services and will be trustworthy. It is rumored that this newly formed association may join the forces of the Vestis Formatae in order to create a possible merchant house in the near future.

Recent games at the Colosseum
On the 21st day of Rindak on the 248th Year of the Republic, Canyon was allowed by the Steward of the Games to take control of the Colosseum, from the start of the afternoon until the sun was setting. In his company was Hephaistion, the leader of the SilverWolves and Ardinia, who is the current leader of the Cruentus Laureola. Everything went smoothly and each fight was relatively fast due to the gladiators who were more than willing to shed their blood for the Republic.
Here are the results:
Victoriah vs Noelan: Noelan / Lorican vs Noelan: Lorican
Shizdain vs Petraeus: Shizdain /Irine vs Zenaria: Zenaria
Culexcus vs Jyus: Culexus / Kadrianna vs Onyxum: Onyxum
Aernus vs Shizdain: Shizdain / Milizinivi vs Onyxum: Milizinivi
Oshie vs Lilius: Oshie / Oddr vs Pythe: Pythe
Pimius vs Culexus: Pimius / Sancin vs Eredar: Sancin
The fights were all held under no special rules. Everything was allowed unless both of the gladiators decided to make their own rules. The gladiator of the night for these fights was definitely Shizdain who displayed incredible talent and sportsmanship.
A grand melee followed and the participants were: Kadrianna, Pimius, Balinor, Onyxum, Lilius, Irine, Milizinivi, Aernus, Culexus, Eredar, Pleistan, Jyus, Leonaii, Oshie and Petraeus. Pleistan and Milizinivi both deserve congratulations on their good performances. They each sent four men or women to unconsciousness on their own. The final winner was Pleistan who had to defeat Milizinivi.

Future Editor Ludorum
The Steward of the Games, Maius Auila, has recently demanded applications for the position of Editor Ludorum and it appears three applicants were chosen to each host a set of games to prove their worth. If the rumors are right, the three individuals vying for the position would be Canyon, Hephaistion and Ardinia. The Iridine Ephemeris wishes luck to all those who are trying their luck at becoming the next Editor Ludorum, a famed position. The upcoming weeks will reveal interesting for two distinct reasons: we will know who will rightfully become the Editor Ludorum and we will have the pleasure of witnessing many gladiatorial games! Many countries in Midlight will envy us as we will rejoice at the sound of metal clashing and the sight of blood dripping on to the sands of the Colosseum!

Poem:
Glory!
The silence and peace before the war,
The loud chants can be heard from afar,
In the antechambers we sit, thinking,
About the time that will be perfect for striking,
The time comes and it is our turn,
We better be careful not to churn,
For victory belongs to the one that's calm,
It can all depend on the movement of a palm,
We dance on the warm sands for the glorious show,
We step forward, duck under, and land a solid blow,
Victory is ours, the only still standing,
And the crowd is left there demanding,
More. Glory is ours!

Adventure to Argosius
When visiting a small village named Argosius my gaze stumbled upon a man who had an annoyed expression on his face. He was sitting in the right corner of the bar with a mug in his left hand. His eyes never lifted from his mug, for a reason I was soon to discover. At first I was wondering if his mug was empty or if it was full and his stomach didn't want any more ale. Not knowing the people in Argosius really well since it was only my second day in the small lumber village, I decided to walk over to him, hoping for interaction of any kind to learn more about the man and the village itself. It was then that I realized the man was missing his right arm and I must have appeared unsettled by it from the look he gave me as I was getting closer. I had seen many atrocities in my time with the Legio and within the city's arena, but it wasn't easy now for me to share my sympathies with the man missing his arm - not like he would have wanted to hear them anyway. I sat down on the chair close to him and ordered two mugs of ale from the barkeeper. When the mugs arrived, I handed one off to the man and I kept the other for me, knowing fully well that I would not drink such a liquid, but nonetheless required an instrument to approach the man. The mugs of ale were my instruments.
Living in a lumber town when you have just one arm can't be easy. It has to be hard and the following years were going to become harder as well unless he could find a way for salvation. He simply gave me a nod and started to guzzle down his heavy mug which became very light before he knew it. I took a very small sip of my ale and ordered the barkeeper to bring some more ale which he did promptly. The one-armed man stared at me for a few brief moments, wondering why I was paying him the ale. He simply said while looking at me, "I don't care for your pity. Go away if it is by pity you buy me these." I ran my fingers through my short abundant hair and told the man I wanted to hear his story, that I had no pity for him, but was interested in the story that lead to the tragic demise.
(to be continued)¶
Adventure to Argosius (part 2)
And it is as such that I learned the story of the man with one arm. While he was in the forest cutting a massive oak tree with his heavy axe a brown bear was prowling the area. Knowing that the bear was in the area, the man didn't want to leave, because if he did, someone else would finish what he had started. The tree was very tall indeed and a man couldn't touch his fingers with his arms going around the tree. He claimed it was as big as a pillar for a temple would be, but he had obviously never seen such a thing. In Argosius, the man who makes a tree fall to the ground is the one who keeps it. As long as a tree stands, it belongs to no one.
The bear was coming closer and closer to the man. The massive brown creature was swatting it's huge paws at the ground causing a mist of dirt in the air. It was growling incessantly, drool coming out of it's mouth. It rushed towards the man and landed it's imposing jaw near the man's shoulder, completely trapping the arm and instantly snapping it like a twig before the bear shook it's head fiercely. The arm was no longer responding to the man's command. He looked over and noticed he no longer had an arm, hurled loudly and the bear ran away. It ran away with the man's arm in it's mouth. Luckily the man made it back to the village in no time and was saved by woman who knew the art of healing. He told me that he wished that he had died on that day. His joy in life was to work hard, cutting down the trees for the Republic's furnaces, houses, ships... He no longer had a purpose in life.
As the story ended, I stood up from my chair and left the man a small sum of two hundred fifteen denars. I told the man that Ereal had a plan for everyone and walked away.

The creatures of Midlight:
The osecar:
An osecar is a small animal which is about a foot and a half tall at most. Their body is covered with striped brown fur that is relatively soft to the touch. They have long, thick teeth that are not sharp at all, they are made for crushing their food rather than cut it. The front legs are powerfully built with thick muscles and heavy claws, marking them as the perfect digging animal. It would appear that in the wild they would dig a hole to live in. They are also known for having a bloated tail which they can rest on and sit upright.
These creatures are not originally from Iridine, but they were imported by some members of the upper classes about thirty years ago in order to become pets. They were quite popular and it is due to their popularity that some individuals decided to make them breed in order to sell them, as companions or for meat. They quickly realized that the osecars would breed rapidly and with such efficiency that they would become a nuisance for those who had some. The osecars are known for giving birth to very small newborns and when osecars give birth, they always have two of them. The newborns are small enough to fit in the palm of a human's hand. This creature usually eats grasses, leaves and flowers. However, outside of the Iridinian walls such creatures would be defenseless against the wolves, bears, foxes and many other animals. These creatures have found refuge in the Iridinian sewer system where they will find a limited amount of food and as such will have to exit the sewers to feed themselves from nearby gardens and vacant lots.
Some individuals in Iridine are breeding the osecars as a source of income and food which is generally accepted as long as they are fenced and do not make too much noise. The small animal appears to be immune to disease unlike the rats and other vermins. Others, on the other hand, still appreciate their company and keep them as pets and it is not illegal to do so.

The people of Iridine:
Ibios Yulian: Born and raised in the Steps, Ibios Yulian was always a hard worker and was never afraid of a challenge. His uncle, an expert swordsman, taught how to use the gladius to many young men, but also kids, in the district of the Steps. He quickly learned the manipulation of the sword and was an excellent student even at a very young age. He quickly surpassed the skill of his various peers of all ages. He entered various tournaments where the users were using wooden gladii to leave no significant damage to their opponents in case an attack would not be parried successfully. His mastery of the gladius allowed him to win these underground tournaments in the Steps without ever harming his opponents. Several stable owners were after him while he was still very young to sign a contract. Knowing such practice was illegal, the stable owners were willing to take the risk for this prodigious child. While he liked displaying his skills, his fate was meant to be that of a hero of the Republic and not becoming a gladiator who fought on the sands for glory. It is with much enthusiasm that he enlisted to join the Legio. He went through the training without ever hesitating.
It is with much valor and honor that he fought in countless battles, earning himself a reputation across the Republic as one of the best Legionaries and swordsman to grace Iridine. He was finally rewarded with the title of Centurion. He eventually retired from the position and continued the teachings of his unwell uncle in the Steps, a school that specializes in the Avros style of fighting.

The places of Iridine:
The Stone Toga Inn:
This inn is composed of many rooms on two floors. There is a bar and a kitchen nearby which still belong to the owner of the inn who I believe is Julian. It is always a full inn because of the high demand due to it's location in the harbor. The salty smell of the wind coming from your window when you are on the second floor, or even on the Stone Toga Inn's roof which has been made accessible by Julian for those wishing to have a better view of the Harbor of the Moons. The bartender is a man named Constantine who appears to have a strange history due to the jagged scar that appears across his right temple, but also the sight of a tattoo which looks like a headless statue on his right arm. Regardless, this man is hard-working and never leaves a dirty dish on the tables or bar. His specialties are the ginger beer, the bloodberry brandy, the evil woman liquor and also the cinnamon apple honey mead along with the michina pluma. My personaly favorite is the michina pluma, a drink made from blackberries.
Valeria is the cook of the inn and she frequently holds contests to allow the pie lovers to create their own masterpieces. Currently on sale are the goat piece with tomatoes and cheese, the spicy berry and herb pie, and last but not least, the citrus and honey-glazed salmon pie which is a must-have for fish lovers. The prices at the inn are all more than easily affordable whether it be the cost of drinks, food or renting a room. For those who have never been to this inn, I would definitely recommend it. Many folks hang around this inn at any given time, making it the perfect place to meet strangers, hear stories and have fun!

History of Iridine:
The era of kings: (part 1)
Tulca: (1-48 Era of Kings)
Two hundred and thirteen years before the birth of our glorious Republic, the era of kings in existance. In fact, it had just started by a man named Tulca. He was the first king of Iridine. From the 1st year up to the 48th year in the era of kings he was reigning over Iridine and he accomplished many great things which are still existing even to this day. The first enactment of his career was one that has changed the times which were to come. The practice of the moonworship was finally outlawed and those accused of such pathetic worshipping were either exiled or tried and then executed for their crime against Ereal. This was put in effect so that Ereal's anger would not rise against the Iridinian people which would have caused Him to turn His back on the world once again as was done before such a time when men would fear living on the lands of Midlight.
The modern calendar was then created by Tulca who was a very intelligent man, but also a fierce warrior. The creation of several Iridinian priesthoods were created and the sects of Ereal followed. After creating these, he went on to create the Order of the Flame, which still exists to this day and is annexed to the Legion as a specialized unit.
The first king of Iridine had done an incredible amount of work before he died of old age.
