Contraband

Tears

Tears can be collected from various places in the region of Rock Valley. Cracking a tear awards a character a varying amount of skill points (SP) or general skill points (GSP).

By order of the Senate, Barbarian Tears are now to be considered contraband.

It has come to the attention of the Senate and the Cult of Ereal that objects discovered outside the small village of Rock Valley have been imported into the city. These pebbles, known colloquially as "tears", are said to give the bearer fanciful visions upon the application of percussive force.

The Cult has examined several samples of these items and found them to be nothing more than rocks whose curious formation has trapped small amount of noxious aroma inside each cavity. Upon breaking, the smell is released and befuddles the senses mildly.

As the ritual destruction of these items has now increased in commonality, and given that these pebbles are normally used by the outlying barbarian tribes in their unnatural ceremonies, the possession of these tears has been decreed to be a crime against the Republic, suiting the charge of Possession of Outlawed Magical Items.

All those currently in possession of the barbarian pebbles are advised to turn them over to the nearest priest for destruction. The Phoenix Guard has been alerted to confiscate these items during their regular searches at the gates. Offenders will be prosecuted under the statute named above.

The use of these tears shall be punished as the Use of Outlawed Magic.

Even being caught in possession of a tear (without use) can earn you a warrant of "9. Possession of Outlawed Magical Items". The Phoenix Guards may search your possessions for any such item while you cross the checkpoints in and out of the city and will arrest you if a tear is found in your possession.

Using Tears

To use a tear crack tear while it's in-hand.

Tears cannot be cracked by characters with Superstitious Fears. Characters with the trait also cannot grab them from the amphorae in Rock Valley hunting grounds.

Location

Tears can be found in and collected from 3 different Rock Valley hunting grounds. The '[x]' denotes the number of amphora to collect from.

*Within Undertown, 2 of the boss room amphora have a 50% chance to spawn.

Types

Different types of tears award SP into their related skillsets, but only if they are known by the character. If a character cracks a tear and knows none of its related skill sets, GSP will be awarded instead.

Example of looking at a gladius tear:
You see a round, clear stone. It is a lopsided oval, reminding you of a tear or an egg. It is smooth to the touch, and never seems to be any temperature aside from pleasantly warm. Peer closely enough into it and you can see faint images, though you're not sure whether they're real or simply tricks of light reflecting along the swirls within. In this particular stone, you see what resembles a gladius.**

Type Will award SP to...
Gladius Any Offensive or Defensive Combat Skill Set
Tree Outdoor Survival or Hunting
River Healing
Forge Locksmithing or Tailoring
Shadow Pickpocketing, Setups or Street Smarts
Nightmare* = N/A

Nightmare Tears: The 6th type of tear is called a nightmare tear. This type differs in that it has no unique description of its own when looked at. It will look like any of the 'normal' types of tears. When it's cracked, it will award no SP, and instead drain all of your character's fatigue*.

Awarding SP: If several of the related skill sets are known by the character, only 1 skill set (selected at random) earns the SP from cracking the tear.

GSP: If none of the related skill sets are known by the character, GSP is earned instead.

Tear Sizes

The size of the tear you collect from the amphora will vary depending on how long it's been since you last collected from that amphora. Combat SP & Non-Combat SP awarded are also by your weekly SP cycle.

Tear Size Hours Since Combat SP Awarded* Non-Com SP Awarded* GSP Awarded*
Small 24 Hours - 35 Hours ??-?? ??-?? ??-??
Medium 36 Hours - 47 Hours ??-?? ??-?? ??-??
Large >= 48 Hours ??-?? ??-?? ~5 GSP

The amount of SP & GSP earned from cracking tears is increased (~50% more) for characters with the Luminescent* trait.

Hoods

Following the assassination of a Senator, garments that exist for the sole purpose of hiding one's identity have been deemed illegal to possess. The hooded cloak, unlike a regular cloak, possesses a hood that can be pulled to cover one's face.

When wearing a hooded cloak, simply use the pull command to conceal your identity. You can also use the push command to reveal your identity.

The sole possession of a hooded cloak is considered a crime (possession of contraband) and the Phoenix Guards will automatically attempt to seize such an item from your person.

Masks

Following the assassination of a Senator, garments that exist for the sole purpose of hiding one's identity have been deemed illegal to possess. Masks will automatically conceal your identity once worn.

The sole possession of a mask is considered a crime (possession of contraband) and the Phoenix Guards will automatically attempt to seize such an item from your person.
