Ode to a Field Mouse

Still reddish ball of fur at my feet,
twitchy whiskers sensing danger.
Everything about you is so small
while the world around you
looms large and dangerous.
You watch me through bright black eyes
wide and unblinking.
Suddenly you hurtle towards a nearby rock
and disappear into your home
where everything is warm and dark

Hunters Instinct

Rustling in the tall grass
raises the fine hairs on a hunter's arm.
His nose twitches as he seeks for scent.
Blood rushes through his veins
as he grips tightly to his bow,
sending a single arrow into the night.
Moonlight twinkles the flint tip
and the grass is still again.

Campfire

Campfire dances in the starlit sky.
Smoke coils up to the heavens.
I see my reflection in the orange flames
as the tinder turns to ash before me.
The wood crackles as the sap burns
and in the darkness of the still night,
I am one with the stars above
Glowing, sparkling, and burning slowly out.

Picnic With Leo

Sunlight reflects the glow I feel
and the water rushes softly past.
Theres nowhere in the world Id rather be
than on this muddy bank with you,
our fishing poles dangling off the pier.
Fish swimming calmly beneath
Have no fear of being caught today
As we have only hooked each other.

Little Lion

Daffodils grow tall in the grassland:
yellow-spotted sunshine among
dry green stalks.
They sway in the breeze
like proud lions in the jungle,
yet they merely mewl
softly against the gentle wind.

Drowning Worms

Orange-finned swimmer
paddling the deep blue river
placidly steals worms from my hook.
He shows his appreciation
in gurgling bubbles.
He swims downstream
to invite his cleverest friends
to join me for lunch.

Gone Camping

Stuck in a lean-to with you
as the rain pounds hard
on the grass-sewn roof.
The air sizzles loudly:
our campfire succumbs to the storm.
Im not worried about staying warm
on our pallet of soft furs.
Our bodies are sore from a long day
of collecting firewood and weaving rope.
Stuck in this lean-to with you,
I hope the rain lulls us to sleep.
It thumps the walls
in tune with our heartbeats.
