Notes on Learning

  • Only currently available in the Beta-Test area. Fell Trees is not available, other skills can be used.

  • The log comes from a tree standing there. Forest timber runs to oak, birch, pine, cedar, walnut, olive, and tilock. Ash, brightash, satinwood, sycamore, dursc, and moskan reach the bench as bought lumber.

  • A stand yields a limited run of logs, then needs time to recover. Higher Basic Forestry brings in a fuller, finer log.

  • Planks come in three sizes: thin, standard and thick.

  • You can use the SAW command to cut planks in halves or quarter planks.

Skill Details

Fell Trees fell tree

Fell in a forest, with an axe in hand or close by. Keep a hand free if the axe is lying nearby. A two-handed axe favors the fell.

Required Tools: one-handed axe or two-handed axe

When you see this in use you see:

> fell tree TBC

Debark Timber debark <raw timber log>

Once a tree has been felled, use a one-handed or two-handed axe to remove the bark from the log. It is much easier to use a one-handed axe for the job. Ranks in debark increase plank quality, reduce roundtime and changes skill echo to show mastery.

Required Tools: one-handed axe or two-handed axe

When you see this in use you see:

> debark log [Success: 31, Roll: 5] The bark tears raggedly under your tool, and you have to reset your grip before starting the pass again. [Success: 31, Roll: 50] You take a two-handed bronze axe. You scrape away the bark with a two-handed bronze axe in fits and starts, wood shavings and bark chips scattering everywhere. Finished, you set a two-handed bronze axe aside.

Rough Square Timber square <debarked timber log>

Once the bark has been removed, you must use an axe to square the log before marking it and cutting it. Ranks in rough square increase plank quality, reduce roundtime and changes skill echo to show mastery.

Required Tools: one-handed axe or two-handed axe

When you see this in use you see:

> square debarked [Success: 21, Roll: 61] You take a two-handed bronze axe. You hack at the log with a two-handed bronze axe, chips flying in every direction and the resulting faces wandering and uneven. Finished, you set a two-handed bronze axe aside.

Crosscut Timber crosscut <rough-squared timber>

Using a woodworking saw .... Ranks in crosscut increase plank quality, reduce roundtime and changes skill echo to show mastery.

Required Tools: a woodworking saw

When you see this in use you see:

> crosscut rough-squared [Success: 15, Roll: 15] The saw binds in the kerf, and you have to ease it back and start the cut again. [Success: 15, Roll: 20] You take a bronze woodworking saw. You drag a bronze woodworking saw through the timber in halting strokes, the kerf wandering and the cut faces ragged. Finished, you set a bronze woodworking saw aside.

Timber Markup markup <crosscut timber>

Using a piece of chalk, you mark a set of lines where the wood will be cut to turn the timber into several logs. Ranks in markup increase plank quality, reduce roundtime and changes skill echo to show mastery. Amount of slabs marked is based on wood type.

Required Tools: a piece of chalk

When you see this in use you see:

> markup crosscut [Success: 16, Roll: 91] You scratch a rough set of layout lines along the timber, dividing it into five slabs. The kerfs wander a little, but the plan will hold.

Detailed Sawing detail saw <crosscut timber|rough timber slab>

Once the wood has been laid out for cutting, you must first cut a slab off from the crosscut timber. You may have to repeat this process several times depending on how big the crosscut timber is. The resulting slabs must then be cut in order to produce the rough planks.

Required Tools: a woodworking saw

When you see this in use you see:

> detail saw crosscut [Success: 1, Roll: 10] You wrestle a bronze woodworking saw through the layout marks and a rough slab parts free of the timber. Four more to go. > detail saw slab [Success: 1, Roll: 67] You finish the slab and a rough thick plank parts free. The remaining scrap is brushed aside and discarded.

Planing planing <rough plank>

To finish the plank, you will have to use a hand plane and run it along the rough surfaces until it becomes even. Ranks in planing increase plank quality, reduce roundtime and changes skill echo to show mastery.

Required Tools: a hand plane

When you see this in use you see:

> plane rough [Success: 5, Roll: 62] You take a bronze hand plane. You shove a bronze hand plane along the rough thin plank in jerky pushes, curls tearing free at odd angles and the surface still uneven. Finished, you set a bronze hand plane aside.

Lamination laminate <finished plank> and <finished plank 2>

To change the thickness of a plank, you may use two planks and combine them with glue using a pair of woodworking clamps to hold them in place. Once the glue hardens, two combined thin planks will result in one standard plank. Two standard planks will result in one thick plank. Ranks in lamination increase plank quality, reduce roundtime and changes skill echo to show mastery.

Requirements: Matching planks must be of same quality. Matching planks must be of the same wood.

Required Tools: wood glue, woodworking clamps

When you see this in use you see:

> laminate plank and 2 plank [Success: 1, Roll: 14] You smear glue from a small glass jar filled with thick amber glue across the plank faces and wrestle them into a pair of bronze woodworking clamps, cranking the jaws down until the seam grudgingly closes. When you release the pressure, a fresh standard black walnut plank remains, the glue line a bit sloppy but sound.
