Avros Guide¶
Avros Gladius Combat Guide¶
Below you'll find everything important to know about the Avros Gladius style.
In a Nutshell¶
Pros¶
- You can also use Skill Points (SP) from Swords to learn Avros.
- Stab and Slash is both a double-hitter & defense-penetrating attack.
- Whirling Strike is a hard-hitting maneuver, capable of 5th level damage.
- Forced Thrust is a defense-penetrating attack, very effective against polearms.
- Needle Strike is a quadruple-hitting attack.
- Strike and Smash has a chance to knock down your target.
- Flinging Disarm can free your trapped weapon from an axe, cestus or trident.
- When Flailing Defense is performed successfully, it will negate the benefits of the target's Perception for their next attack.
- Sunrise Block is an additional sword block that can override weaker swords blocks that cover the same defensive area.
Cons¶
- Rapid Strike has a chance to drop your weapon on a missed roll. This will no longer occur one you've reached grandmaster (90 ranks) in Avros Gladius Combat (Basics).
- Whirling Strike has a chance to leave openings on a missed roll. This will no longer occur one you've reached grandmaster (90 ranks) in Avros Gladius Combat (Basics).
- Forced Thrust will always leave openings on a missed roll and can only be used on a target wielding a weapon. The openings will no longer occur one you've reached grandmaster (90 ranks) in Avros Gladius Combat (Basics).
- Strike and Smash will always leave openings on a missed roll and can only be used on a standing target wielding a weapon. The openings will no longer occur one you've reached grandmaster (90 ranks) in Avros Gladius Combat (Basics).
- Using Avros means the investment in a completely separate skill set, outside of Swords and Shields. This will likely lead to longer training and more overall SP required to progress to higher tiers of combat.
- While Needle Strike hits 4 times, overall it's relatively weak and a more damaging triple-hitting maneuver can outperform it.
Additional Notes¶
- Pivot Lunge is a partial-disengage in the sense that it will keep you approached to your target, but retreat you from anyone else otherwise approached to you.
- If Sunrise Block overlaps with another sword block, the block with the higher Rank Bonus is taken. See the Blocks & Dodges spreadsheet for an idea of where there may be an overlap.
Advice & Tips¶
- All attacks that have chances to make the wielder fumble, leave openings, fall down, etc. will no longer do so after achieving rank 90 in the relevant parent skill. This is highly recommended.
Weapons¶
Summary¶
In most cases, if still using Reflexes, you'll want a retalq gladius. If your character has maxed their Speed stat at Outstanding, a reforged boison gladius may prove more beneficial.
For detailed information, see the Sword Guide.
Moves¶
Worthwhile¶
- Stab and Slash - A strong, double-hitting attack with defense-penetrating capabilities and a high chance to crit.
- Whirling Strike - A heavy-hitting attack, aimed high by default.
- Forced Thrust - A good attack against polearms, but can only be used against standing opponents wielding a weapon.
- Rapid Strike - A good chopping attack.
Less useful¶
- Pivot Lunge - Parting-type attack, retreating you from everyone except your target. Hard to land and your other opponents can typically reapproach easily.
Complementary Skill Sets¶
- Shields is near-mandatory.
- Nelsor Gladius Combat is highly encouraged.
- Brawling is highly encouraged.
